Trouble with Wordpress Pluggins
My blog, Your Poems Your Stories, had gone completely weird. The lines were skewing all over the place. But as I had made several changes in a short period of time it was hard for me to figure out what had caused the trouble and which change I needed to revert
I had:
- Changed Webhosts from Blue Host to Webhosting Buzz, as covered in my last post
- Upgraded Wordpress to the lasest version (update to Wordpress 2.51)
- Added new URLs to my list of sites to ping
- Added new plugins …
Oops! Too many changes at once. So when the lines of text on the posts and the sizes of blog pages got all skewed and out of whack, I couldn’t figure out what it was.
Moral: If you are new to Wordpress (or maybe even if you aren’t) don’t make too many changes at once. If something goes wrong, you might have a hard time figuring out what it was an why.
After trying many things (redoing the upgrad, deleting unused pluggins from the server, unpublishing and republishing posts …) I finally deactivated all of my pluggins and that handled the problem.
I then had to reactivate my pluggins one by one -okay, sometimes two or three at a time, and then refresh my blog post pages in another browser window each time, to see if the problem returned. I started with reactivating the pluggins I had had on for the longest time, as the newer ones were more likely to be creating the trouble. Well I probably should have checked the newest pluggins first and then I’d have found the troublemaker faster. It was the 2nd to last pluggin I reactivated.
It was a social bookmarking button. As soon as I reactivated it, the lines started to go splooey again. Very easy to handle, I just used a different one instead.
(The pluggin which was causing the trouble was the “Add-This Social Bookmarking Button.” I replaced it with a button free I got from this Social Bookmarking Submission Service website. They have a link to a free bookmarking button for blogs. But I also found out they have a Directory Submission Service where they will manually submit your blog to social bookmarking sites (up to 160 I think) and to directories (up to 1000) for a very low cost. I’ve paid for manual directory submissions before but I paid much more!
This site (Social Bookmarking Submission Service) does seem to have a good reputation – I was referred there by someone (Jason Potash of Comment Kahuna) who I trust relatively well. He makes a point of not spamming search engines and also of not recommending services which aren’t really good (I even once got an email from him recommending for new online marketers not to sign up for a certain service that he was an affiliate of as it would be the wrong step for them).
In any case, my Wordpress blog (Poems and Stories) posts are no longer skewed and splewy, my social bookmarking button is in place, and all is well.
